The Institute for World Economy (IEM) was founded in 1967. Its main objectives are the study and analysis of national and international economic policies, as well as their impact.
An essential pillar in the activity of the IEM is to provide useful tools to the national authorities in the analysis of the economic situation and support in ensuring the robust growth of the economy. Throughout the entire period of activity, hundreds of studies and syntheses were developed that constituted an important support for decision-makers. In addition, under the auspices of the IEM, researchers from the institute published numerous books and university courses that represented the basis of professional training for generations of students.
At the international level, IEM developed collaborations with similar institutions from Eastern and Western Europe, which were essential in the in-depth understanding of the economic context of these countries. Within the IEM, the analysis of economic policies and their implications within the member states of the European Union were the main subjects of study and every year, the institute’s research plan includes studies in this field.
In general, IEM has disseminated the results obtained through research studies, developed policies, by participating in conferences and publishing scientific articles in specialized journals, but also through inter-institutional dissemination programs. Also, IEM was part of the Interinstitutional Working Group from Romania that analyzes the economic and financial impact of the health crisis caused by COVID-19, provides policies, and elaborates different economic scenarios. In this context, the experience of the institute is relevant for the problem addressed. In the framework of the current project, the inter-institutional relations developed by the IEM with the central authorities provided for an integrated approach to the study of economic preparation, as well as the economic and social impact of reactions in the field of public health. Also, the institute has concluded inter-institutional agreements with the institutes of the neighboring countries through which the developed studies are disseminated.
